WORKSHOP ON CLIMATE CHANGE,
RURAL COMMUNITIES AND THE CHURCH
February 23, 2008
Washington, DC
|
NCRLC and the Catholic Coalition on Climate Change will conduct a special session on Climate Change: Adaptation Strategies for Rural Communities and the Church at the annual Catholic Social Ministry Gathering in Washington, DC.
Through stories and analysis, this workshop will present the public discussion and action around climate change. We will examine the impacts on ecosystems in the US and worldwide, mainly in terms of water and energy use, and impacts on the most vulnerable people.
The stories and analysis will come from current and expected impacts on rural U.S. communities in various regions of the country: Alaska, Midwest, Southeast, Northeast, and Southwest including California.
We will also identify strategies of mitigation (reducing greenhouse gas emissions) and adaptation (dealing with climate change).
We will consider the role of the church in such strategies and our commitment to a new creation ethic that urges an examination of our consumer mentality, a willingness to sacrifice, and a realistic embrace of the principles of prudence, poverty alleviation and regard for the common good.
We will close the session with a reflection on our relationship as human beings to the earth and Creation, while acknowledging the commandment to love one another, especially feed all who hunger, care for the poor and respect human life.
The session runs from 10 am to 2:30 pm on Saturday, February 23,
2008, at the Hyatt Regency Washington on Capitol Hill, Washington, DC.
