Iowa Religious Leaders Say Climate Change Policy Needed
to Protect People and Creation
Des Moines, Iowa. Iowans should advocate for policies that will ensure that Gods creation and Gods children are protected from the threat posed by global warming. Yesterday, 14 bishops, church executives, and other religious leaders joined in calling on their congregations to do just that.
The leaders of eight denominations in Iowa called the church of Iowa to face the challenge of global warming and global climate change by affirming their commitment to be responsible stewards of Gods creation and by acting in love toward their neighbors around the world.
The leaders urged Iowans to take personal action and communal actions through their religious congregations to mitigate global warming, including reducing energy use through conservation and using energy efficient vehicles and products. In addition, they encouraged Iowans to ask their Senators and representative to support binding legislation that would require mandatory steps to stop climate change that would result in real and significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, the cause of global warming.
There are some who believe that their livelihoods may be hurt by policies to reduce global warming, they acknowledged. Policies should accommodate the economic needs of the poor and those whose livelihoods may be affected in Iowa, our nation, and throughout the world. People of faith can and should help bring about effective policies that protect Gods creation and all Gods children, they concluded.
