Swine Production Who is my neighbor?
This 88-page packet is a process and resource guide for rural parishes or groups examining livestock operations in their community. Large-scale swine production has significant impacts on air and water quality, which in turn creates tensions and disputes in affected communities.
"Who is my neighbor?" helps deal with community divisions rising from industrial agricultural practices.
The process is designed to be a prayerful time, respectful of the inherent dignity of all involved in and affected by swine production. Parishioners will be able to reflect on their personal responses to changes in agriculture in the light of scripture and Catholic social teaching.
This set of resources includes reproducible facilitator guide, participants guide, and background resources on the impacts of large-scale hog confinements on air and water quality and communities. The guides were designed for swine production communities in Iowa, but are readily adaptable for other states and other livestock issues.
