Although this institute is landless, it grew out of the concept of "Earth Literacy" in the late 1980's. The mission of the institute is to foster Earth literacy by working to include a cosmological context and ecological principles in the course objectives of each discipline throughout the community college. The Institute promotes Earth literacy through curriculum development and collaborative faculty studies, along with special programs, courses, events and field trips for students. Miriam Therese MacGillis is one of its founders and current advisory Board members.
