COOL CONGREGATIONS WORKSHOPS PLANNED IN CEDAR FALLS, IOWA CITY, AND CEDAR RAPIDS – PARTICIPANTS SOUGHT

Iowa Interfaith Power & Light will conduct "Cool Congregations" workshops around the state this winter and are currently planned in Cedar Falls, Iowa City, and Cedar Rapids. Hosts for these workshops are Trinity Episcopal Church, Iowa City, Jan. 20 (contact Bob Sessions, bsessio@kirkwood.cc.ia.us); Christ Episcopal Church, Cedar Rapids, Feb. 17, (robbinse1@msn.com); and St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, Cedar Falls, Jan. 13 (contact Sara Webb, sarahwebb@cfu.net). All area congregations are invited to participate in these three workshops. Find out more by contacting the individuals listed.

"Cool Congregations" will also be conducted as part of gathering of the Southeastern Iowa Synod, Evangelical Lutheran Church in America in Cedar Rapids, March 10.

Participants in "Cool Congregations" workshops learn how to organize a stewardship program in their own congregation where congregants can pledge energy efficiency, save money and prevent global warming pollution. There is no charge for this workshop.

Additional congregational sites are sought. Available dates are February 3,17; March 3,17,24,31. Contact Tim Kautza ncrlctk@mchsi.com; 515.270.2634 if your congregation would like to host this 3-hour workshop.

INTERFAITH CLIMATE AND ENERGY CAMPAIGN SEEKS VOLUNTEERS

Iowa Interfaith Climate and Energy Campaign will be training volunteers who wish to help raise awareness of the moral implications of global warming and resulting climate change. Workshops will be conducted in January via the Iowa Communications Network to help individuals learn how to conduct simple 60 – 90 minute introductory gatherings with congregations, to write effective "letters to the editor" and op-eds for distribution to local newspapers and religious media, and to communicate with legislators. To find out more, contact Tim Kautza 515.270.2634; ncrlctk@mchsi.com.

INDIA LEADS THE PACK IN CLIMATE CHANGE ADAPTATION

India is taking more steps than most to put in place measures to offset effects of global warming, the World Bank said last week. India already has launched development programs designed to improve the country's ability to deal with weather conditions and poverty and to better tackle water management issues. The Indian subcontinent in the future is likely to face more frequent and more severe natural disasters, more disease, and poor crop yields as a result of climate change. www.alertnet.org/thenews/newsdesk/DEL310961.htm

OCEANS GIVE "SNEAK PEAK" OF GLOBAL WARMING RESPONSE

Decreases in the production of phytoplankton, a microscopic plant life that marks the start of the food chain for zooplankton and marine animals, due to warmer weather indicate how the world's oceans will respond to global warming in the coming decades, says a study published Thursday that analyzes new NASA satellite data. Scientists warn that small changes low on the food chain can significantly impact species higher up the chain. http://www.thestar.com/NASApp/cs/ContentServer?pagename=thestar/Layout/Article_Type

BANGLADESH SUFFERS FROM RICH WORLD'S EMISSIONS

Bangladesh already is starting to feel the effects of climate change caused mainly by pollution from industrialized nations, and scientists say it is only going to get worse with more severe flooding and droughts. The rich and poor worlds need to make a deal with each other, with poor countries better helping their people to adapt to climate change and rich countries doing more to rein in emissions. www.guardian.co.uk/comment/story/0,,1965820,00.html
