Why We Came Together
An ecumenical consultative working group came together in late 2002 to helpChristian denominations
and agencies develop coherent and consistentpolicies regarding genetic engineering in agriculture
(plants and animals).
The consultative working group is examining the ethical issues, based onChristian principles,
surrounding genetic engineering in agriculture. We areconcerned about impacts on farmers and
rural communities around the world,as well as the unresolved issues related to hunger, human health,
environmental impacts and food sovereignty posed by the spread ofgenetically engineered and patented
organisms.
