Water For Life ~ Streams of Justice
The World Council of Churches and a number of representatives of member
churches and world communions have participated in the preparatory process
for the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD). An Ecumenical Team
formed for this purpose was active at the WSSD in building a faith-based
understanding of the integral relationship between social justice, human
development, and protection of the environment. This statement is a result
of this work.
"The Johannesburg plan of implementation doesn't hold water"
"New global relationships" -- that was the promise of Agenda 21, a plan of
action adopted at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 1992. In Johannesburg
ten years later, this promise goes unfulfilled. That is the assessment of an
Ecumenical Team attending the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD),
which ended September 4th.
