St. Isidore and Maria Award Winner Announced

Monday, March 28, 2011

NCRLC is pleased to announce Daun and Scott Maier of Waunakee, Wis., as the winners of this year’s Isidore and Maria Exemplary Award. This award honors a rural couple who exemplify fidelity to a vision and vocation of rural life, which combines family, stewardship and faith.

The Maiers have been operating Scott’s family dairy farm since their marriage, and farm in partnership with Scott’s brother and wife. Scott’s parents still live on the farm as well. The Maier Family Dairy Farm milks 650 cows and farms 1200 acres in rural North-central Dane County.
The Maiers are active members of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, where their three children attended the parish Catholic School that Scott had attended as a child. Scott and Daun are actively involved in their parish’s leadership and events, and host children from the school to yearly tours of their dairy operation to help educate students on farming life as an important vocation they might someday become involved in. They are both members of the Young Farmers Bureau and have served as National Ambassadors for the National Council of Farm Cooperatives (NCFC).
“Whether these two remarkable members of this exemplary farming family are reaching for the hands and hearts of community members or the warm udders of their dairy cows, they do so in joy and gratitude,” said Tom Nelson, Rural Life Coordinator, Catholic Charities of Madison.
